Smart Select
Auto-picks the best model for your request so you do not have to choose, with reasoning effort scaled to the task
Smart Select reads your prompt and routes it to the best model for the job, so you get strong results without having to know which model fits which task.
Overview
Instead of choosing a model yourself, pick Smart Select and let Kolbo decide. It looks at what you are asking - a quick question, a coding task, a creative brief, a reasoning-heavy problem - and routes the request to a model suited to it. When the task calls for deeper thinking, Smart Select scales up the reasoning effort; for simple asks, it keeps things fast.
This is the easiest way to chat when you are not sure which model to use, or when you would rather not think about it at all.
How It Works
- Open the Chat tool and choose Smart Select in the model selector
- Write your prompt as you normally would
- Kolbo analyzes the request and routes it to the right model
- Reasoning effort is matched to the task - more for complex problems, less for quick ones
Grok is the default backbone for routing, with reasoning depth adjusted per request. You still get full context preservation, so switching to or from Smart Select mid-conversation never loses your history.
Best For
- When you are unsure: let the router choose instead of guessing
- Mixed workloads: a single session that jumps between quick questions, coding, and research
- New users: a sensible default before you learn each model's strengths
- Web-grounded answers: pair Smart Select with web search for current, well-reasoned responses
Tips
- Use Smart Select as your default and switch to a specific model only when you have a strong preference
- Be clear about the kind of task in your prompt so routing lands well
- Turn on web search for current-events questions - Smart Select still synthesizes the answer
- Switch to a named model anytime; context carries over both ways
- For side-by-side comparison, use Dual or Triple mode with specific models instead
